Why Adoption |

There are many agencies in California providing Wraparound service to
families in the community. Most use a "one size fits all" model, and then
measure how well they adhere to that model (known as Wraparound Fidelity).
They are all working to preserve families by keeping children at home.
Kinship Center is the only agency in California providing Adoption
Wraparound as a specialty that is different from all other programs. The
reason is that adoptive families are different! Adoption of any child, whether as a newborn infant or a sixteen year old, inevitably and predictably brings issues and experiences that are unique. The absence of the biological tie to either parent inevitably creates themes within the relationships that will emerge in ways that are often not at all obvious to the uninitiated. This is especially true for families who have adopted from the foster care system, with its overlay of early neglect, physical or sexual abuse, lack of security and attachment impairment. Add to these the impact of prenatal substance use on the neurological system of the child and the complexity of the parenting task becomes daunting to say the least. Time and time again adoptive parents, and older children, tell us that professionals and helping individuals simply don't understand what their family needs. Traditional behavioral strategies and therapies simply do not work for them, or at least provide only partial solutions. To effectively help adoptive families it is vital that providers are adoption-competent, which means they are familiar with an extensive body of knowledge of adoption dynamics, capable of communicating their comfort with that knowledge, and aware of the techniques and strategies that will help healing. Without that level of experience and competence all the help in the world will be virtually useless. |
Key to the adoption experience are seven core issues that effect the children, the adoptive parents and the birth parents.
